Who we are ABOUT US
Leask was established in 1987 as J A Leask Architects in Edinburgh’s West End. Our achievement is to remain a small personal practice committed to delivering a high quality of service to clients in a bespoke sector of our industry. This is maintained by having a majority qualified Architect staff base resulting in most staff having the requisite all round design, technical and managerial skills to job run projects. Simply put, the knowledge and experience is above the usual practice profile.
We are what you would call traditional service Architects within the leisure and licensed trade. This sector has a significantly higher proportion of interior designers, graphic and branding firms and general design companies than other sectors such as housing and offices. However, their scope is often limited to “design intent” and generally they don’t manage the project. As Architects first, we can and generally look to manage the entire process from inception to completion which includes building contract administration.
Often in the leisure industry, clients have specific brands and team frameworks already in place, we also have extensive experience of collaboration with other designers, often performing a technical development and project management role on such projects. Essentially we can do the pretty front work, technically develop those ideas, manage and drive the project
Michael has been with the practice since 2005 and took it forward as a limited company in early 2012. He is primarily responsible for the practices movements into the brewing and hotel sectors as well as possessing a wealth of restaurant and traditional bar experience. Prior to 2005 Michael gained experience in retail, commercial and housing developments. An interesting fact about Michael is that he is half Belizean and half Scottish, that’s a 1 in 1,500,000 chance.
Níall specialises in high quality contemporary domestic and residential architecture. He continues to provide bespoke designs to a select group of private home owners through his own practice Capital A Architecture, while bringing his expertise to larger mixed use projects for Leask. An interesting fact about Níall is that he is a published author.
David has excellent technical and job running skills with a strong understanding of licensed trade and hotel developments. Prior to joining our team David built up extensive experience in the commercial and residential sectors in both the UK and Australia. An interesting fact about David is that he has travelled to over 70 countries.
Manuel joined the practice in October 2015 having completed his studies at the University of Seville. After practising in Spain for several years he has built up strong experience in refurbishment and extension projects both in the private and public sectors. Manuel has a very strong technical ability and a good understanding of engineering and mechanical aspects which contribute greatly to our bespoke installations and product design on numerous projects. An interesting fact about Manuel is that he does not even like beer.
Nick joined the practice in September 2015 after completing his studies at the University of Strathclyde. He has a strong individual style and approach with a good mix of digital and hand drawing skills for wonderful designs and great presentations. Nick is working towards his Part 3 qualifications so he is involved in all types of projects at various stages. An interesting fact about Nick is that he is often mistaken for Worzel Gummage.
Rebecca is responsible for all of the practices administrative and financial duties including marketing, CPD and compliance. An interesting fact about Rebecca is that she is a professional juggler and a Veterinary Surgeon.
Roca does not actually contribute much to the running of the practice likely due to the fact she is a dog. She is however in the office most days and is very polite indeed. An interesting fact about Roca is that her Kennel Club name is Solstice Thunder.
